This holiday season, the city of Boston will be lit with festive LED lights.
This holiday season, Boston's Emerald Necklace will have a special shine. The seven parks strung throughout the city will feature over 80 trees and the Parkman bandstand decked in the bright luminescence of
LED lights.
This is the second year LED lights will be used on the city's tree. Last winter, the switch to LED bulbs reportedly saved the city 3462.5 watts of energy per tree, or $20, 775.
The Parks and Recreation Department works with Mayor Thomas Menino to promote lighting efficiency throughout the city of Boston through various initiatives.
Last year marked the start of the Lights Out Boston project, encouraging participants to turn off all architectural and internal lighting visible from the outside by 11 p.m. every evening and leaving them off until daylight.
This year is poised to be another Yuletide conservation celebration when the official tree lighting ceremony takes place on Thursday, December 3. The lights will go on as Menino and Santa flip the switch while R&B singer Brian McKnight sings holiday tunes.
The event is one of many tree lightings that will use
energy saving light bulbs this holiday season. Reportedly, LED bulbs will really hit the big time as part of this year's upcoming tree lighting at Rockefeller Center in New York City.
