Rihanna and other stars sport LED stage costumes.
Rihanna's AMA performance was illuminating - and illuminated. The star lit up the stage with her laser enhanced bondage costume, taking part in what seems to be the growing trend of
LED technology infused stage wear.
The R&B singer's glowing look seems to be a real crowd pleaser. Fans at SingersRoom blogged that "shoulder pads have never looked so hot!" and respondents at Blogcatalog "loved the laser outfit." Fashioning Technology went as far as to suggest the outfit was the highlight of the awards ceremony, saying, "regardless of how you feel about Rihanna's performance at the AMA's, her laser-enhanced costume stole the show!"
Rihanna's laser infused duds, featuring more than 50 lasers, were a result of a collaborative effort of her personal stylists, Simon Henwood, and fashion designer Moritz Waldemeyer. A technologist turned designer, Waldemeyer has created dozens of LED innovative stage outfits.
Waldemeyer is increasingly gaining popularity with singers who hope his LED creations will add to the star power of their performances. In the past, he has made LED-enhanced stage suits for the Black Eyed Peas, laser-enhanced skinny jeans and gloves for one of Mika's music videos, and a laser jacket Bono wore at a U2 concert in Barcelona. Waldemeyer was also the mastermind behind the LED-infused stage costumes that Michael Jackson was set to wear for his "This is It" tour.
The designer aspires to be a trend setter, and he may be quickly accomplishing that goal; FPD International reports that
LED lights, with their unique brightness and energy saving features, are the highest growing entertainment lighting product in the global market.
