New LED lashes can really brighten the eyes.
A Japanese artist is giving the term bright eyes a whole new meaning with the launch of her
LED eyelashes.
Designer Soomi Park constructed false eyelashes strung with small, bright blue LED
bulbs. The lashes are attached to ear phones that house a tilt sensor and other necessary electronics to make the lights flash as the head moves, giving the illusion of blinking.
The artist says her product speaks to many Asian women's desires to have bigger eyes. Soomi calls her LED project an ode to "the fetish of Big Eyes." But many online fans are coming up with other clever reasons to wear the lit lashes.
Some enthusiasts see recreational value. Fashioning technology hopes to the lashes will be used as costume accessories and NerdwithSwag.com predicts the lashes will become the latest trend at nightclubs.
Others think the lashes have more practical value; Treehugger.com encourages fans to use them for cycling at night.
But these warm opinions are not shared by all. One respondent for Youth Media International thinks women should stick to black eye liner. Another unimpressed commenter at NerdWithSwag.com simply wrote, "Good Lord, this is stupid!"
But the lashes have the potential to offer wearers a smart - even if unintentional - benefit. According to researchers for Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, exposing eyes to bright
LED lights can delay circadian rhythms of the body and keep late night drivers more alert.
