LED lights might brighten up homes in 2010.
Energy-saving light bulbs are supposed to gain popularity among homeowners who want to
go green this year. Now it seems they could also be the next big thing for people who want to add visual impact to their homes in 2010.
Designers for Electronic House predict that
LED bulbs will be a popular decorative element this decade. They point out that LEDs are easy to install because of their small size. This makes them easy to inconspicuously tuck into walls, ceilings, and floors for subtle light sources. Paul Koren, owner of Impact Lighting, says the lights "completely blend in with the environment."
Also, the bright bulbs come in a wide variety of colors; they can be used to add a splash of color to bathtubs, countertops, backsplashes and more. Designer Marla Greenough of Greenough Interior Design says, "
LED lighting offers such a wealth of opportunity to control and manipulate color."
As the price of LEDs comes down, designers plan to get increasingly creative. Some have begun experimenting with adding LEDs into cove ceilings to simulate sunrise and sunset. Others have started experimenting with LED pressure sensors under carpets that set off the light bulbs in a room when a person walks in.
In addition to brightening up homes, LEDs are expected to take off in the commercial lighting sector. LEDs magazine predicts that the overall
LED lighting market will reach $1 billion by 2011.
