Seems like we get asked about dimmable compact fluorescent bulbs every day. People love to set their own custom light levels in their homes and incandescent bulbs work great! But what about if you want to also save energy and use CFLs instead?
Well, the results so far are less than acceptable. Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) can cause many types of dimmer switches (or even the ballast) to buzz. This is because a dimmer typically will reduce voltage, which ends up decreasing the current to the bulb itself. Aside from the annoying buzzing, this reduction in current can also cause flickering in the bulb itself.
Although you can achieve some better results, with name brands like Sylvania, Westinghouse, GE and Philips, even high quality manufactured dimmable CFL bulbs and dimmer switches still seem to result in buzzing and flickering.
We spend a great deal of time researching new technology, so you can be sure to find the best quality products here. If you want to give it a try, browse through our dimmer switches and dimmable bulbs.
Until the the technology is perfected, if you want to get a really good dimming effect, just squint! ;)
