Twenty years ago the fiber optic flower was being sold in shopping mall kiosks across America. The flowers were typically inside an acrylic casing and were quite colorful before being lit up. When the flower was plugged in, the magic began. Myriad points of light started glistening and covered the flower in beautiful light. Then the flower would begin changing color due to a hidden color wheel inside the base. The effect was stunning. This application found itself transferred to various sizes of Christmas trees from 12” to 5’ and up. Sales were brisk as this new technology caught the eye of the consumer.
The magic ended when the light source burned out. What was not well planned was the aftermarket for the specific light bulbs that these items used. Originally, there was one primary light bulb that was used in the flowers. It was a special 12v 8w screw based bulb not made by any major manufacturer. As a lighting distributor that originally received many of the calls looking for the bulb, I was determined to find the source. I eventually found the source as an import. The result was that eLightBulbs (Van-o-Lite at that time) became perhaps the primary source in the country for supplying that little bulb that was necessary to light the flower.
With the advent of the fiber optic Christmas tree, the variety of bulbs used grew. Most of them, however, were still import only. Having found sources, eLightBulbs expanded it’s inventory. With the advent of the internet, we have become one of the primary sources for these replacement light bulbs in the country.
Most of the light bulbs used today are small low voltage halogens inside of mirrored reflectors. (MR8s or MR11s) Here are some of the most common wattage/voltage combinations used:
Note: MR8 refers to a mirrored reflector that is 8/8ths of an inch in diameter - MR11 refers to a mirrored reflector that is 11/8ths of an inch in diameter
- 6 volt 5 watt
- 6 volt 10 watt
- 12 volt 5 watt
- 12 volt 10 watt
- 24 volt 10 watt
- 12 volt 15 watt
- 24 volt 20 watt
This list is certainly not all inclusive but represents a sampling of what eLightBulbs inventories in order to help the consumer avoid frustration in providing maintenance on these fiber optic novelty or holiday items.
