A medical center in Pali Momi, Hawaii has replaced around 2300 fluorescent lamps in its parking garage and stairwells with even more energy efficient LED light bulbs. According to a spokesman for the medical center, this LED retrofit has already cut the electric bill by more than half. In addition to the greatly reduced energy usage, LED light bulbs further reduce future costs with their long life.
LED Light Bulbs Long Life
The LED light bulbs the Pali Momi Medical Center has installed are rated at over 75,000 hours of life, with the possibility of lasting 100,000 hours. Compare that to energy efficient
compact fluorescent light bulbs which last between 10,000 and 15,000 hours and you can see how money will be saved by not having to replace light bulbs for a very long time. LED light bulbs have a significantly higher initial cost, but for those able to reap the benefits of future returns, the higher initial cost is well worth it. The Pali Momi Medical Center expects their investment to be repaid in 15 months; after that, it will be many years of pure savings.
LED Light Bulbs Save Money
Businesses and commercial operations in a lot of places are benefitting from LED light bulb retrofits. The Honolulu Airport is reported to be able to save $100,000 a month by retrofitting their parking garage with LED light bulbs, and that doesn't include the many other facilities in which LEDs could be installed. LED light bulbs are even more green than compact fluorescent light bulbs, considering that LEDs do not contain any toxic chemicals like mercury, and they do not emit UV rays.
Any business can benefit from installing LED light bulbs. The upfront cost may be daunting, but it's the savings and returns in the long run that need to be considered. A lot of money can be saved every month on electricity, and the benefit of extremely rare necessity for light bulb replacements cannot be ignored.
