Candelabra base light bulbs are not as common as normal medium base bulbs, but they certianly are used in many lighting applications across the nation. The normal name for this base type is fairly well known, but it is also known as an E12 base. This is the technical name and refers to the number of millimeters across the base of the bulb. This is very close to the mini candelabra, which is an E11 base, but they are not interchangable--even though only a millimeter separates the two. The smaller E11 has a longer stem and contact sticking out, making contact with the socket, so even if the E12 was forced into the socket, it wouldn't have a long enough stem to create a connection.
Candelabra base light bulbs are commonly used in chandelier and other decorative applications. In fact, it is rare to see standard bases on such fixtures. In order to accomodate a wide variety of different designs and styles, E12 bulbs are manufactured in the following shapes: B shape, which is often called torpedo or tear drop shape; G shape, which is shaped like a globe;T shape, which is a tubular style with straight edges; C shape, which is often referred to as a Christmas light or night light style; and there are several other less common shapes available, too. You can find lots of candleabra base bulbs in both standard incandescent and halogen incandescent bulbs. In fact, they are making compact fluorescent models now that will fit candelabra sockets so you can use long life, energy saving bulbs in more places. These models typically are in the 5 watt to 11 watt range and would replace a normal bulb from 15 to 40 watts. They use much less energy and will last an average of 7-10 times longer than normal bulbs.
