Some people think that regular bulbs come in 120 volt only, but that's not the
case as there are 12 volt
light bulbs for special lighting applications. These are the standard size bulbs which you might be familiar with,
the ones you've probably bought for years in hardware stores. You might
also know them as household light bulbs. The "A"
shape was one of the first designs and continues to still be the one most people
use. They fit in almost any light fixture, but one of the most common
places that it's used are in landscape and outdoor lighting. It has a
standard medium base and screws into sockets that are made for all kinds of
lighting. The reason they have an outdoor application is that many low
voltage light systems for landscape light fixtures utilize 12 volt light bulbs.
Sometimes they're used in lantern fixtures or certain kinds of area lighting
outside. If you tried using a 120 volt bulb in a 12 volt light bulb
socket, it would burn very dim, so you'll need the low voltage version to get
the correct amount of light.
Incandescent lamps are the type that were developed earliest of any of the other
kinds and these developed into what we know as the 12 volt light bulbs.
There are several wattages of these that are available right now which would be
the 25, 50, 75 or 100 watt versions. They have a frosted finish and are the
same size as regular light bulbs except for the larger wattage which comes in an
A23 shape. It's a bit larger in the bulb portion and longer on the neck.
If you don't know whether you have a high voltage or low voltage system outside,
then you need to have an electrician check it out for you or check the previous
bulb you used and look for 12 volt anywhere on the bulb itself. Although
this voltage isn't a common use of an A shape light bulb, they do pop up once in a while for
certain kinds of 12 volt lighting situations. We always keep these in
stock and we sell them at a very reasonable price.
